First up, where things ended in The Force Awakens and start in The Last Jedi is the planet of Ahch-To, where the outlet reveals that Luke isnât alone standing on that rock in the ocean but living among an âindigenous race of caretaker creatures.â These creatures, which director Rian Johnson assures are ânot Ewoks,â live in âbeehive-shaped hutsâ (pictured above), similar to what the ancient monks that actually lived on the location of Skellig hundreds of years ago would live in.
Another place is the âglittering casino cityâ called Canto Bight, which will see Finn and newcomer Rose Tico finding themselves in as the story progresses. Johnson calls it âa Star Wars Monte Carloâtype environment, a little James Bondâish, a little To Catch a Thief.â
âIt was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe,â he revealed. âI was thinking, O.K., letâs go ultra-glamour. Letâs create a playground, basically, for rich *ssholes.â
There are also some more details on the new characters from the film, including the one played by Benicio Del Toro, who actually wonât be named throughout The Last Jediâs runtime. Described as âa âshady characterâ of unclear allegiances,â Johnson reveals that internally theyâve referred to him as âDJ,â the reasoning for which fans will be able to pick up on. Thereâs also Laura Dernâs character, Vice Admiral Holdo, described as âa prominent officer in the Resistance,â and another new character named Paige, who is the sister of Kelly Marie Tranâs Rose Tico.
Finally, one last piece of relevant info was revealed about the future of Star Wars as the magazine notes that Star Wars: Episode IX, which has Colin Trevorrow behind the camera, is scheduled to begin shooting in January.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It will open in regular and IMAX theaters on December 15, 2017.
