Sony Nabs TV Series Based on Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time Novels

Sony is set to develop Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time as a television series

A TV series based on the late Robert Jordan‘s The Wheel of Time series of novels is in the works at Sony Pictures Television, according to Variety. The series began with The Eye of the World back in 1990 and ended with A Memory of Light in 2013. The final book was finished by Brandon Sanderson, as Jordan passed away in 2007. The eighth through fourteenth books in The Wheel of Time series each reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. The story follows a group of characters lead by Rand al’Thor on the search for the Dragon Reborn. There are 14 novels in the series, which was nominated for a Hugo Award after its completion.

Sony will produce with Red Eagle Entertainment and Radar Pictures. Rafe Judkins, known for working on ABC;s Agents of SHIELD, Netflix’s Hemlock Grove and NBC’s Chuck is on board to write and executive produce. Red Eagle’s Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon and Radar’s Ted Field and Mike Weber will executive produce with Darren Lemke. Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal will be a consulting producer.

McDougal posted the following on the Google+ page for the series:

“Update: Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time. Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio —Harriet”

There have been attempts to make films and series based on “The Wheel of Time” since 2000. There has been a video game, a role-playing game and a soundtrack album based on the series.
