The Girl on the Train rides into first, Finding Dory passes $1 billion

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures‘ The Girl on the Train opened in first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $24.6 million from 3,144 theaters, an average of $7,844 per theater. Made for $45 million, the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel, also earned $1.2 million overseas in six territories. The film, which received a B- CinemaScore from audiences, stars Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon.

With an estimated $485 million domestically and $517 million internationally through Oct. 9, Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory is crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office today, becoming Pixar’s second billion-dollar release (alongside Toy Story 3) as well as The Walt Disney Studios’ fourth billion-dollar release in the past 12 months and its 12th ever. It is the fifth-biggest animated film of all-time globally.

Back to North America, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children dropped a spot to second place and added $15 million for a two-week total of $51 million. Internationally, the film added $42.5 million from 75 markets to bring its overseas total to $94 million and worldwide total to $145 million. An adaptation of the Ransom Rigg book, the 20th Century Fox release was directed by Tim Burton. Made for about $110 million, Miss Peregrine stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.

Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon earned $11.8 million in third place for a total of $38.5 million domestically after two weeks. Directed by Peter Berg, the $110 million film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven grossed $9.2 million for a total of $75.9 million after three weeks. Made for $90 million, Antoine Fuqua’s modern remake of the western classic stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer and Peter Sarsgaard.

Warner Bros.’ animated adventure Storks rounded out the top five with $8.5 million and has earned $50.1 million domestically after three weeks. Internationally, the $70 million film added $9.7 million for an overseas total of $56 million and worldwide sum of $106.1 million. Storks is voiced by Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston.

Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation opened in sixth place to $7.1 million from 2,105 theaters, an average of $3,373 per theater. Fox Searchlight Pictures bought the rights to the film at the Sundance Film Festival for $17.5 million.
