Uh-Oh, Will The Dark Tower Crumble?

Same old song for long-gestating adaptation

Was it too good to be true? Next to “The Talisman,” Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” is one of those troubled properties in Hollywood that always comes close to reaching the screen…until it hits some sort of snag in development.

“The Dark Tower” is so close to coming to fruition. Ron Howard is set to direct. Javier Bardem was going to star as Roland. And the grand plan was to make three movies with a television series to link the films.

Here’s the rub.

The Hollywood Reporter says Universal has never officially given this endeavor the green light. Whoops. Like Guillermo Del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness, which was on a roll then shut down due to budgetary concerns (and also never given the green light), sources are saying Universal is worried about what this will cost them (which has always been the concern with a “Dark Tower” adaptation). The studio might put the project into turnaround.

Ron Howard’s guys at Imagine deny this all, however.

Apparently, Warner Bros. and Sony might consider picking it up if Universal drops the ball.
