Max Brooks’ World War Z Movie Update

Paramount’s holding onto the property

Can a big studio commit to a big budget zombie picture featuring an epic scope?

Well, let’s look at the studio: Paramount. The property? Max Brooks’ “World War Z.” Marc Forster is on board to direct and Matt Carnahan is taking a crack at the script (after J. Michael Straczynski). The studio is known for big blockbuster fare these days: Transformers, Iron Man, G.I.Joe (ahem). Will it factor flesh-eaters into their equation? That really remains to be seen.

Brooks offers a glimmer of hope, however. He tells FearNET: “Paramount just renewed the option for World War Z, for half the time and twice the money, so that might signal interest. We still got our director, Marc Forster, who’s raring to go. Were all waiting on Matt Carnahan’s new draft, which should come in a month or so. Once that comes in then I think it probably will have to be tweaked and brought to the studio but we’re sort of zeroing in on that moment where Paramount has to say yes or no.”

The author vocalizes some concerns such as cutting the budget might mean limiting the scope. Forster might be able to stretch his budget, though, and give this story a grand feel
