EXCL: Stigmata 2 in Development at MGM

Sequel to the 1999 religious thriller

Remember when the world was supposed to crumble at the close of 1999? The turn of the new millennium brought about fears of technological breakdown and good old-fashioned, prophesized mayhem. Cats and dogs living together…mass hysteria!

Hollywood cashed in with two religious horror-thrillers: End of Days (“1999 has 666 turned upside down! Gah!”) and Stigmata…both starring Gabriel Byrne (hmm, Byrne + Armageddon = ?). Arnie ultimately cleaned up more at the box office back then, ShockTillYouDrop.com has learned MGM and producer Frank Mancuso Jr. are currently developing Stigmata 2.

The original, directed by Rupert Wainwright (The Fog), told the story of Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette), a young woman suffering from stigmata, and the conflicted priest (Byrne) sent to investigate this funky phenomena. It pulled in a domestic take of $50 million, part of an $89 million worldwide gross.

Various sources have informed us Mancuso and company are currently going out to writers for ideas on where to steer the sequel. Whether it will fall into MGM’s planned direct-to-DVD slate is unknown.
