Capturing the Essence of Night

Slade sets fanboy minds at ease

It’s IDW Week at Newsarama and in their extensive reflection on the comic book publisher responsible for a great many horror comics – including “30 Days of Night” and the continuing adaptation of Clive Barker’s “The Great and Secret Show” – the staff caught up to director David Slade. He’s the cat behind Ghost House Pictures’ big horror event 30 Days of Night – yes, based on the comic of the same name created by Steve Niles.

Slogging through post-production, Slade was particular about telling the news outlet about the film’s overall look as many of the comic book’s fans have been concerned about whether or not he’ll accurately capture the atmospheric art of Ben Templesmith. “We are not too heavy on CGI effects—though we have some fairly remarkable things happening digitally that I believe have never been quite done this way, at least not to this extent before (but I am going to keep the rest of that hush-hush),” Slade says. “I think this is going to be very different from 300, and I think very different from any vampire film I have seen. Aesthetically, I was driven by Ben’s artwork. We retained as many of Ben’s character designs as we could, and overall, the Barrow of the graphic novel, and the look of the colours, will translate into the film. In one case, down to the patterns on a character’s fabric.”

Slade is working to complete the film – starring Melissa George and Josh Hartnett – for an October 19th release. Read the rest of Newsarama’s interview by clicking the link above!
