Nicholas Meyer is Returning for the New Star Trek Series!

Nicholas Meyer, who directed The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, is returning for the new Star Trek series!

“Some people think the future means the end of history,” says William Shatner‘s Captain James T. Kirk at the end of Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. “Well, we haven’t run out of history quite yet.”

It’s a line that corresponds rather nicely to today’s announcement, straight from showrunner Bryan Fuller, that Nicholas Meyer will be returning to the final frontier for the first time in a quarter of a century. In addition to helming the original crew’s big screen swan song, Nicholas Meyer famously reinvented Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future with his acclaimed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Now, he’ll serve as writer and consulting producer for the new series.

“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames,” says Fuller. “He saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation. We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldy returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff.”

As previously announced, the new series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in early 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. The new Star Trek series marks the first original series developed for CBS All Access.

The next chapter of the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

Star Trek will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman, Fuller and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers.
