Judy Greer is a very fun actress who often brings plenty of depth to her characters. Of course, this year she’s had two awful characters to play in both Jurassic World and Ant-Man and I’m not sure if she had more than two minutes of screen time in Tomorrowland… that movie is sort of a blur to me at this point and best left forgotten. However, it does appear Greer does have one solid performance on the horizon in Jamie Babbit‘s Fresno (now apparently titled Addicted to Fresno). Here’s the plot:
Fresno is a comedy about co-dependent sisters who work as hotel maids in Fresno, CA. Shannon (Judy Greer) is fresh out of sex rehab when her younger, overly optimistic lesbian sister Martha (Natasha Lyonne) lands her a job as a maid at Fresno Suites, the local hotel. When Shannon jeopardizes her fresh start by accidentally killing a hotel guest after a post-rehab relapse, Martha goes to great lengths to help her sister cover up the crime. Shannon finally learns to take responsibility for her actions, and the sisters begin to resolve their tortured relationship.
Mike caught this one at SXSW and had some kind words in his review saying he “did not expect something as madcap as this” film ends up being. “They go for it all,” he wrote, “being crass for the sake of it, smart character jokes, and even broad physical comedy. How often do we get that nowadays, aside from fat people falling down? It’s refreshing to watch Lyonne poorly fake a seizure as well as funny. And that coexists perfectly with Aubrey Plaza‘s sly witticisms.”
I’ll say this, I got to the line I used for this post’s headline and went to post the trailer right away. That was enough for me to say this is something I want to see.
Along with those already mentioned the film co-stars Clea DuVall, Ron Livingston, Allison Tolman, Fred Armisen, Molly Shannon and Malcolm Barrett.
Addicted to Fresno will be released in theaters come Oct. 2 and will arrive On Demand on Sept. 1 from Gravitas Pictures. Check out the not safe for work trailer below.
