J.K. Simmons Joins Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in Damien Chazelle’s ‘La La Land’

In my opinion, one of the biggest cinematic surprises of last year was the success of Whiplash, which managed to sustain its momentum from Sundance, where the film took home the Grand Jury Prize, to Oscar, where it wound up with three golden statuettes including one for J.K. Simmons as Best Supporting Actor.

Writer-director Damien Chazelle has The Hollywood Reporter.

Labeled a modern take on the Hollywood musical, La La Land finds jazz pianist Sebastian (Gosling) and aspiring actress Mia (Stone) drawn together by their common desire to do what they love, but as success mounts the two are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

Simmons will play a character called “Boss” in the film, and while there are no further details about what his role entails, I assume a name like that means he is an important player in some way. No matter the size or extent of Simmons’ role I’m excited to see what Chazelle turns out here, especially considering Gosling and Stone had some impressive on-screen chemistry in Crazy, Stupid, Love, a movie I’ve likely seen more times than anyone else reading this article. Looks like we have a bout a year to wait and see, as La La Land is slated for a July 15, 2016 release.
