Patty Jenkins at one point was going to be the first female director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before stepping off Thor: The Dark World, which was then given to Alan Taylor. Now, she will be the first female director in DC’s Cinematic multiverse (they are the ones with the multiverse, right?). After the departure of director Michelle MacLaren on Monday from the forthcoming Wonder Woman, Jenkins will step in.
This is also coming on the heels of rumors of Angelina Jolie Captain Marvel, another female-led superhero film. I guess this means women can only direct women superhero films and not vice versa? But I guess progress is progress and I’m glad these women are being looked at for big blockbusters. However, it just feels a little odd they are just being looked at for the female-led features? If Jenkins, MacLaren, or Jolie were offered something like Aquaman or Shazam!, I think that would be pretty big news, but, like I said, progress is progress.
This not to say I’m upset with DC for giving this job to a woman, and quite frankly, it makes me happy they would. Patty Jenkins has only directed one feature film thus far, Monster, which got Charlize Theron an Oscar, and that was eleven years ago. She is due to make something new, and I hope Wonder Woman turns out to be good, though under the Snyder/Goyer umbrella I have my doubts.
The film is slated to come out June 23, 2017 with Gal Gadot as the titular hero. Now let’s see if Jenkins sticks.
