Mini-Review:

My sons and I settled in and checked out “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” on Blu-ray. Yes, we’re manly enough not to be threatened by watching Tinker Bell. Anyway, I wasn’t expecting much from a Disney straight-to-DVD film. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it good, it was better than its predecessor. I think this film could have been released in theaters and done quite well, especially in 3-D. Is this the influence of John Lasseter coming into play at Disney?

The movie opens showing the fairies turning summer into fall. We’re treated to a colorful view as the leaves change color and the animals begin to hibernate. On an HD TV with a Blu-Ray disc, this looked pretty spectacular. I couldn’t help but wonder what it would have looked like in 3-D. The film then focuses on Tinker Bell herself. This time around they don’t have to concern themselves with the origin story. They’re able to dive right into the tale and I think it helped a lot. I also liked seeing bits of Tink’s personality from “Peter Pan” show up here. We see her throw temper tantrums, stomp her foot, turn red, and generally act like the character adults grew up with. Furthering the “Peter Pan” connection, we see a bit of Neverland, Skull Island, and a few pirates. It helped bring the two worlds closer together. This movie also expands on the world by introducing a couple of funny new troll characters and a lightning bug named Blaze. Blaze is a lot like R2-D2 in that he is spunky and communicates in chirps that only Tink seems to understand.

In the story, Tinker Bell goes on a quest to find a magical mirror that will help her repair a moonstone that is vital to the survival of the fairies. It puts her in a variety of perilous situations that allow her to explore new environments, meet new characters, and have an adventure that is accessible to both boys and girls. It concludes in a rather clever way (that I won’t spoil here) while leaving kids with a good message. The final product is a fun film for everyone.

As good as the movie is, the bonus features are kind of slim. “Magical Guide to Pixie Hollow” is a video where we get a tour of the world decorated with sketched versions of the fairies. It’s kind of dull after seeing the movie, both content-wise and animation-wise. “Pixie Hollow Comes to Disney World” shows how they made a Tinker Bell themed flower garden at Epcot. It’s not that exciting either. The good stuff is in the outtakes showing the characters goofing around. There are also a few deleted scenes introduced by the directors. Rounding things out is a music video starring Disney darling Demi Lovato.
