I am going to have a lot of updating to do to my Oscar Predictions when I get back home following so many distribution deals and all the films I’ve seen here at the Cannes Film Festival. So far films such as The Past have been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, Sundance Selects has picked up a ton including possible Palme d’Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color (which I sadly missed) and now Entertainment One is getting in on the game, grabbing rights to Oliver Hirschbiegel‘s Diana starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana.
Diana is described as a compelling portrait of the Princess of Wales during the final two years of her life, charting how finding true personal happiness allowed her to achieve her defining successes, as she evolved into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.
I expect the film will see a Toronto Film Festival premiere and be released shortly thereafter with obvious ambitions for Oscar. Of course, the release timing will be interesting considering The Weinstein Co. has Grace of Monaco in December, though if eOne goes for a late September, early October release for the film they should be far enough away from the Nicole Kidman starrer to make their own separate waves.
