Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jan. 8 – Jan. 10, 2010

The run continues for James Cameron, he now holds the top two box-office slots all-time. No, that’s not adjusted for inflation, but it’s still pretty impressive. After all, it’s not like he’s the only person out there making movies.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 11 Weeks In A Row
I believe alert commenter Danny King was closest to the mark with his $48.9m call. Still, Avatar proved it will eventually come to Earth, finally falling 29 percent. If it wins next weekend Avatar will be the first film since The Sixth Sense to reel off five in a row ten years ago. Yep, it’s been over a decade.
Result: 48.5 million (My rank: #1, $5.8m off)
You have to like the gobeatbox! $17.0m projection here. Sherlock Holmes seems to be on a rather nasty downward spiral. They’ll make money on the project, but it’s looking like the vast majority of the profits will be on DVD.
Result: 16.6 million (My rank: #3, $2.8m off)
Athar had a $16m call on the board, I went too high. Overall I just wish the world’s long Squeakquel nightmare would end.
Result: 16.3 million (My rank: #, $m off)
Mfan and The Jackal had $15.3m calls here, we’ll give the win to mfan for being closer on the placement. I thought the horror fans might come out in force; perhaps the vampire part turned them off? Or perhaps the film needed to be in 3-D? I hear that’s all the rage.
Result: 15.0 million (My rank: #4, $4.4m off)
Well, I’m not going to feel bad about that prediction. It’s Complicated is sporting an $85m production budget, and it’s just over $100m in box office. EW had it listed as a box office “win.” Perhaps we have different definitions of winning?
Result: 11.0 million (My rank: #6, $.5m off)
I’m thankful the general public heeded our warnings here. Trust me, people. You wanted no part of this.
Result: 9.1 million (My rank: #5, $3.2m off)
It doesn’t look like it can hit $250m domesically. But it’s no big deal, Warner Bros. is still swimming in pools of money.
Result: 7.7 million (My rank: #8, $.3m off)
Jason Reitman will have his pick of projects if he continues using $25m production budgets to make buzzy films.
Result: 7.1 million (My rank: #9, $1.6m off)
I would have rather people saw it. But it’s okay, I understand, no hard feelings.
Result: 7.0 million (My rank: #7, $4.2m off)
Ending strong, I’ll take it.
Result: 4.7 million (My rank: #10, $0.1m off)
