Another 9/11 Pic Over at Sony

It was only a matter of time and as Paul Greengrass and Oliver Stone are hard at work on their 9/11 features Sony Pictures is throwing their hat into the tragedy ring as they are preparing to acquire the writes to Reign O’er Me, a drama scripted by Mike Binder with Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler eyeing roles.

The film would find Sandler playing a man who lost his family on Sept. 11 and has never recovered from his grief. He runs into his former college roommate (Cheadle), who has become a doctor and who is determined to help his ex-roomie come to grips with his loss.

As for the other two 9/11 films in production, Paul Greengrass is working on Flight 93 due out April 28, 2006. The film is described as a 90-minute feature covering the flight that crash landed in Pennsylvania in real time as it begins with the takeoff and hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93 by terrorists, the discovery by passengers with cell phones that other hijacked planes had been steered into the World Trade Center towers, and the realization that their plane was being steered toward D.C.

Oliver Stone also has his own flick set up over at Paramount Pictures starring Nicolas Cage, Michael Pena, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Maria Bello in which Pena will play a Port Authority cop who answered the rescue call on Sept. 11, 2001, along with a colleague (Cage). Trapped in the rubble when the buildings collapsed, they were among the few to be rescued.

Stone’s film is eyeing an August 2006 release.
