THINKFilm Picks Up Page’s Fragments

The Tracey Fragments, starring Best Actress Oscar-nominee Ellen Page (Juno) will open in New York City on May 9th, 2008, with a national release to follow. Prior to the theatrical opening, the film, directed by Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo), will have its New York premiere on March 14th as part of ‘Canadian Front’, the fifth edition of MoMA’s annual film series celebrating the best in Canadian cinema.

Based on screenwriter Maureen Medved’s novel of the same name, The Tracey Fragments uses highly inventive and dynamic Mondrian-like split screens to tell the story of why 15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz (Page) is riding out a blizzard in the back of a city bus, naked except for the tattered curtain she’s wrapped in, and looking for her missing brother (whom she fears she has hypnotized). On screen for nearly every frame of the film, Page delivers a tour-de-force performance that cements her status as one of the most exciting young actresses on screen today.

The Tracey Fragments has racked up several awards on the international film festival circuit, including the Manfred Salzgeber Panorama Jury Prize at the 2007 Berlinale, Best Actress (Ellen Page) from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, Best Canadian Feature Film and Best Actress (Ellen Page) at the Atlantic Film Festival. The film was named as one of Canada’s Top Ten by the Toronto International Film Festival Group, and most recently received six 2008 Genie Award nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, for Best Direction, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.

The Tracey Fragments is directed by Bruce McDonald, written by Maureen Medved, produced by Sarah Timmins and executive produced by Paul Barkin. It also stars Ari Cohen, Max McCabe-Lokos, Erin McMurtry, SlimTwig and Julian Richings. The film was edited by Jeremiah Munce and Gareth C. Scales, with cinematography by Steve Cosens C.S.C., and features an original score by Broken Social Scene (Half Nelson).
