“Lost: The Complete Third Season – The Unexplored Experience” is rated TV-14.

The Series:

I’m a huge “Lost” fan, but this third season certainly had its ups and downs. After a couple of seasons of building up the Others, we discovered… they are a bunch of scientists living in a suburban neighborhood on the island. I doubt many “Lost” fans anticipated that. It was kind of a letdown, especially as much of the third season focused on them. Then there was the addition of Paulo and Nikki, two survivors that were moved from the background to the foreground, much to the chagrin of many fans. Then the remaining Tailies were wiped out. In short, the creators tinkered with the winning formula and it didn’t work so well for them.

But by the end of the season, things started getting back on track. The core characters were reunited. The Others were put in their place. Paulo and Nikki had a cool death worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. And the story actually started moving forward again.

But the most notable thing about the third season was the final episode. The characters have been set up to be rescued and the show has switched from flashbacks to flash-forwards. It’s an interesting change in the formula, but it may prove to be more successful than the changes of the third season. I have a feeling that Season Four is going to have a lot going for it.

The Extras:

While the “Lost” DVDs have always offered a lot of extras, this time it seems a little bit lighter than before. Here’s what you’ll find among the bonus features:

The World of the Others – Friends or Foes? – The cast and crew discuss the secrets revealed about The Others over the course of the third season. There’s not much new here, but you do get some insight into where the creators were coming from with some of their ideas.

Terry O’Quinn: Throwing From the Handle – In this video we see O’Quinn practicing throwing a knife. At one point, he pins a dollar to a tree and hits it with a knife from quite a distance.

“Lost” Flashbacks – We see three new flashbacks here. In “Locke Escapes,” we see him flee the commune as it’s being busted by police. In “Funeral Scene,” we briefly visit a funeral with Jin and Sun. Finally, in “People Can Change” we see Nikki lamenting to Paulo that they should become more involved with the other survivors.

“Lost” on Location – This is a series of 10 ‘making of’ featurettes dedicated specifically to individual episodes. Most of the best episodes are highlighted here with behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and more.

The “Lost” Book Club – The many book references in “Lost” are discussed in this featurette. From “Watership Down” to “Carrie,” all the books are discussed.

“Lost in n One Day – This is a pretty interesting featurette that follows the cast and crew of “Lost” over 24 hours of filming. The amount of work taking place on simultaneous episodes is amazing. Maybe they did this to make fans appreciate the episodes that they do get.

Cast in Clay: Creating the Toys of Todd McFarlane – In here you get to see in detail how they created the “Lost” toys. You see the actors getting scanned, the sculpting, and the unveiling. Yeah, it’s a blatant commercial, but it’s still cool to see.

The Next Level: Inside the Video Game – Here’s yet another commercial for “Lost” merchandise, but it’s still cool to see how the game is developed.

Crew Tribute with Evangeline Lilly – Lilly walks around the set and introduces many of the crew members from the show. It’s a lot of fun to see everyone behind the camera and they do seem like a fun bunch.

Deleted Scenes – There are 9 deleted scenes included on the DVD. Most are pretty minor. One featured Nikki and Paulo getting caught having sex in Jack’s tent. Another features some more moments with Hurley and the VW van. In another deleted scene, Locke confronts Ben about his daughter Alex. In it, Locke hints that Ben may not be Alex’s real father.

Rounding out the bonus features are “Lost” Bloopers and Audio Commentaries. “The Orchid Instructional Film” is also included and it seems to give some hints about what the Dharma Initiative was up to.

The Bottom Line:

While not the best “Lost” season, it is still one of the better shows on TV. This is also required viewing before a promising upheaval in season four.
