Wunmi Mosaku will voice a “radically different” take on a classic Batman villain in the much-awaited Season 2. Co-showrunner James Tucker confirmed the Oscar-nominee’s involvement, known for her roles in Loki and Sinners.
Wunmi Mosaku to play a ‘radically different’ Roxy Rocket in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Tucker announced that Wunmi Mosaku will be lending her voice to the villainous Roxy Rocket in the upcoming second season of Batman: Caped Crusader.
A former stuntwoman-turned-robber, Roxy Rocket is a notable member of the Dark Knight’s extensive rogues’ gallery. Charity James had originally voiced the character in 1997’s The New Batman Adventures. However, fans can expect a “radically different” portrayal of Rocket from Mosaku in the Caped Crusader series, as per Tucker.
“We gave her a tragic backstory that she was able to tap into, and the anger,” the veteran animator noted. “In the context of the show, it’s a revenge story, but we don’t know that necessarily at first. We play her as mysterious. We don’t even know she’s a she at first.”
During the interview, Tucker also talked about the influences that inspired their iteration of Roxy Rocket. In addition to renowned rocket engineer Jack Parsons and the fan-favorite 1950s sci-fi hero Commando Cody, DC’s own Bulletman played a huge role in shaping the character. “I also wanted her head to be like a missile, like a bullet, because she literally shoots herself through things,” explained Tucker.
As to how her introduction will impact Batman in Caped Crusader Season 2, Tucker remarked that Rocket would be “a way to break Bruce down a little bit where he’s showing empathy. He goes into the cast thinking it’s one thing, and then he has to reassess because he’s very single-minded as a character.”
The Caped Crusader’s second season is currently on track to premiere on July 31 on Prime Video.
