Sadie Sink‘s undisclosed role in Spider-Man 4 is giving fans flashbacks to other movies that have attempted similar stunts. Sink has been rumored to play Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has confirmed the speculation.
Why are people comparing Spider-Man 4 to Star Trek and James Bond?
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out later this month, fans still don’t officially know who Sink is playing. However, there have been several rumors about her playing Jean Grey in the upcoming film. Some fans have compared Marvel’s decision to keep her role secret as being comparable to Benedict Cumberbatch’s casting in Star Trek: Into Darkness. Before that film came out, many fans immediately guessed that he was Khan, though the filmmakers kept denying it. He was ultimately revealed to be Khan.
A fan, @staidindoors, compared Sink’s mystery role to Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek: Into Darkness and Marion Cotillard in The Dark Knight Rises. Cotillard’s character was revealed to be Talia al Ghul in the Batman film, a revelation that many fans had predicted.
“Audiences love when you cast a famous person in a mystery role and then reveal who they’re really playing halfway through the movie,” @staidindoors wrote on social media. “They go crazy for it. Works well every time.”
A similar marketing strategy was used for the James Bond film Spectre, in which Christoph Waltz was ultimately revealed to be Blofeld, despite marketing that concealed the twist. The decision frustrated many fans, with @AstonishingX_21 noting, “It either has a negative reaction or no reaction because everyone already knew. I can’t think of a single time it’s actually had a positive impact.
Adding to that, @LevesqueT wrote, “Sadie Sink’s Jean Gray secret reminds me of Benedict Cumberbatch l’s secret as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.”
It remains to be seen who Sink will play in Spider-Man 4. If her character is revealed to be Jean Grey, it would signal that Marvel Studios is setting up its upcoming X-Men saga early. The original X-Men actors will reprise their roles in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases on July 31, 2026.
