Christopher Smith’s fate may not be the only tragedy left by Peacemaker Season 2’s finale. Jennifer Holland believes Emilia Harcourt could be facing an even more painful emotional fallout. The actor recently shared two possible explanations for how Harcourt might process Chris’ disappearance after the shocking ending.
Jennifer Holland sees a second tragedy in the Peacemaker Season 2 finale
Peacemaker Season 2 ended with Christopher Smith finally finding a sense of peace before everything unraveled. Rick Flag Sr. captured him and sent him to Salvation, a dimension ARGUS secretly uses to imprison metahumans. Chris was left stranded with no way home, and the finale never showed how the people closest to him reacted, especially Emilia Harcourt, with whom he had just begun a relationship.
Speaking to ComicBook during her collaboration with Milk-Bone tied to Supergirl, Holland said Harcourt would likely arrive at one of two conclusions. She explained that Harcourt saw Rick Flag Sr. operating Salvation and “started to piece things together,” making it possible that she suspects Chris vanished because of those events.
But Holland also believes another possibility is even more heartbreaking. Chris repeatedly blamed himself for the pain in everyone’s life and wanted to remove himself “from the equation” so others could be “happy.”
According to Holland, Harcourt may instead believe Chris chose to leave her behind. She said that if Harcourt thinks she was abandoned after finally allowing herself to be vulnerable, she could “revert back to an even worse version” of who she used to be. That would be especially tragic considering Harcourt spent much of the series dealing with the loss of Rick Flag Jr. before slowly opening herself up again as part of the 11th Street Kids.
DC Studios has not announced a third season of Peacemaker, but James Gunn has already confirmed Salvation will remain important to the larger DC Universe. That means Chris’ cliffhanger ending is expected to continue in a future project instead.
