House of the Dragon fans can’t decide whether to cheer or cry after Season 3’s latest gut-punch farewell. Viewers flooded social media with emotional tributes as one of the show’s most iconic performances came to a devastating end.
House of the Dragon fans bid farewell to Rhys Ifans with Otto Hightower’s death
House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 2, delivered Otto Hightower’s death in a shocking scene. Rhaenyra executes Otto by beheading him to prove her strength after taking King’s Landing. His daughter, Alicent, later discovers his body in the throne room, lying in a pool of blood.
Otto had been absent from the show since Aegon removed him as Hand of the King. The former Hand spent the intervening time imprisoned in the Red Keep’s dungeons. His return proved brief, as Daemon discovered him alongside Lord Jasper before Rhaenyra ordered their executions.
Fans across social media expressed mixed emotions about the character’s departure from the series. One user on X wrote, “as team black I cheered when otto hightower met his end… but as a fan of the show i mourn the loss of such an incredible character played by one of the best actors on the show, Rhys Ifans.”
Another user posted, “Farewell to Rhys Ifans, who gave us a phenomenal portrayal of Ser Otto Hightower. Your performance was nothing short of exceptional, and the show is better because of it.”
Additional fans celebrated both the character and the actor behind the role. One user stated, “rip otto hightower you deserved to die but you were a legend for delivering this banger.” Another praised the Welsh actor in Portuguese, calling his performance incredible throughout the series.
Rhys Ifans portrayed Otto Hightower across all three seasons of the HBO prequel series. The character served as a key political strategist who shaped the Targaryen civil war. His scheming placed Aegon on the Iron Throne and sparked the Dance of the Dragons conflict. Fans widely regarded Ifans as one of the strongest performers in the ensemble cast.
House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3 premieres on July 5, 2026, on HBO and streams on Max at 9:00 PM ET.
