House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 ending sees Rhaenyra claim her birthright

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 ends with Rhaenyra finally sitting on the Iron Throne. Notably, the queen arrives at King’s Landing with Daemon after Alicent fulfills her promise to them. Consequently, the guards outside the Red Keep surrender their arms without resistance.

Inside the castle, however, Rhaenyra and Daemon face armed Kingsguard knights blocking the throne room. Daemon dispatches them while the Gold Cloaks, previously secured by Alicent, back the Black queen. Meanwhile, Ser Luthor Largent declares support, remembering Daemon’s time among their ranks.

With no Aegon available for judgment, guards instead drag Otto Hightower from the dungeons. As it turns out, Larys Strong had secretly imprisoned Alicent’s father beneath the Red Keep. The former Hand of the King then faces Rhaenyra in the throne room before gathered lords.

Daemon urges Rhaenyra to execute Otto publicly to prove her authority as queen. Otto himself asks Daemon to perform the killing, saying to Rhaenyra, “spare me at least from being hacked at.” Additionally, the old man twists the knife emotionally before his death.

Rhaenyra takes Daemon’s Valyrian steel sword, Dark Sister, and attempts the beheading while sobbing. Her first strike fails, hacking into Otto’s back before a second swing completes the execution. Shortly after, Daemon swiftly kills Lord Jasper Wylde as well.

Rhaenyra then ascends the Iron Throne steps, leaving a trail of blood behind her. She touches the seat momentarily before falling into the throne in a daze. Soon after, guards march in Alicent and Helaena, captured while attempting to flee the city.

Alicent discovers her father’s headless body on the throne room floor. Ultimately, Rhaenyra shifts from visible anguish to steely resolve as the episode cuts to black.

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3 premieres on July 5, 2026, exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
