Fans hoping for Pixar‘s Ratatouille 2 may be disappointed after an update from director Brad Bird. The original 2007 animated film was critically acclaimed and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
What is the Ratatouille 2 update?
Brad Bird, who helmed Ratatouille and the Incredibles movies, was directly asked about a sequel in a new interview. Online chatter about a potential Ratatouille 2 has picked up as of late, given Pixar’s current release strategy. However, when speaking to Collider, Bird said that a sequel is not happening right now and that he’s not really interested in making a story. However, he did note that Pixar continues to ask him about it.
“They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react,” said Bird, referring to Pixar. “They’ll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, ‘Would you?’ And I’m like, ‘No, we told that story.’ Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, ‘How about another?’ People have mentioned it about The Iron Giant, which is hilarious to me because the film didn’t succeed at all in its initial release. It’s caught up in time, but what would you do to follow that up? He’s lumbering around, still undiscovered? In other words, to me, that story is told.”

While Bird has closed doors on more Ratatouille, the filmmaker is still open to making sequels to his other films, namely The Incredibles. Bird returned to direct Incredibles 2, which was released almost 14 years after the original. A third Incredibles film is also in development, although it will be directed by Peter Sohn.
As for Ratatouille 2, Patton Oswalt, who played Remy the rat in the original film, also wants the potential sequel to have the “same energy” as the most iconic sequels in film history.
Bird is instead focusing his efforts on Ray Gunn, an animated film 30 years in the making, coming to Netflix later this year. The film is set in a retrofuturistic world, with a voice cast that includes Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell.
