Universal Pictures has officially announced the release date for its next Shrek spin-off movie. This comes after the critical and commercial success of 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which received a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What is the release date for the Shrek spin-off movie?
Per Deadline, the studio confirmed that its long-awaited solo Donkey movie with Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy has now been scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2028. It will premiere exactly a year after the theatrical release of Shrek 5. The spin-off’s release will also pit it directly against DC Studios’ Batman animated movie, Dynamic Duo, and the live-action Call of Duty movie. It will also debut in the same month as Disney and Pixar’s Incredibles 3.
The Donkey movie is expected to feature the origin story of how “a donkey, became Donkey.” In a previous interview, Murphy shared that they’ve already started the Shrek spin-off’s production in September 2025. It is directed by The Lego Batman Movie’s Charlie Bean and The Wild Robot’s Matt Flynn. The film is produced by Rebecca Huntley.
“Donkey’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story,” Murphy teased.
Before the Donkey movie, fans will first see the beloved character reuniting with Shrek and Fiona in the upcoming Shrek 5 film. The fifth installment also stars Mike Myers as Shrek, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, along with franchise newcomers Zendaya as Felicia, Marcello Hernández as Fergus, and Skyler Gisondo as Farkle. It is directed by Conrad Vernon, Walt Dohrn, and Brad Ableson, with Michael McCullers writing the screenplay.
