The iconic conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War left Marvel fans shocked, and none seemed to have had a response as wild as the one witnessed by Mark Ruffalo. According to co-director Joe Russo, Ruffalo was stunned during the opening night screening of Infinity War after seeing the crazy reaction of a fellow Marvel fan.
Joe Russo details Mark Ruffalo’s crazy fan encounter during Infinity War
In a recent interview with Comic Book Resources‘ Sean O’Connell, the renowned filmmaker narrated an incident involving Mark Ruffalo, where the four-time Academy Award nominee had to witness a fan literally rip his shirt off after seeing Avengers: Infinity War’s ending.
“Mark Ruffo tells a very funny story, a maybe somewhat disturbing story, of a guy in a theater in New York City who was in there with his son,” noted Russo. “It was Friday night, opening night of Infinity War. When everybody ghosted out at the end of the movie, he said the guy got up and ripped his shirt off and started stomping around the theater and screaming, ‘Why, why, why?’ Now, we don’t want — that’s a good response to have. We don’t need everyone to have that response.”
Notably, the third Avengers movie concluded with Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) succeeding in his plan to wipe out half of the life in the universe. This resulted in the deaths of several MCU superheroes, including Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Bucky Barnes, Star-Lord, Falcon, and Spider-Man, among others.
Nevertheless, all these characters made a triumphant return in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame after the remaining superheroes invalidated Thanos’ snap using time travel.
Endgame also marked the departure of the Russo brothers from the MCU, having helmed four movies in the ever-expanding franchise. However, the duo has now returned to direct two more Avengers movies, in the form of Doomsday, which will premiere on December 18, 2026, and its direct sequel, Secret Wars, which is on track to come out in 2027.
