Ryan Coogler’s new take on a sci-fi classic is moving forward, but not at full speed. The X-Files Reboot has attracted major talent, but Hulu has not committed to a full season. That decision has raised questions among fans eager to see the franchise return. New comments from one of the show’s stars now offer a clearer picture of what is happening behind the scenes.
Himesh Patel on why Hulu’s X-Files reboot hasn’t got a series order yet
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Ryan Coogler’s upcoming reboot is why Hulu has only ordered a pilot instead of a full season. According to actor Himesh Patel, that choice comes down to caution rather than concern. Speaking on Virgin Radio UK, Patel explained that the team wants to make sure the revival meets expectations before moving ahead.
Himesh said nobody wants to rush a franchise that means so much to longtime viewers. As Patel put it, “It’s just not wanting to rush it,” especially with a property “so precious to people.” He added that he has his “fingers crossed” the project will continue on the right path.
It might sound a little old-school in today’s streaming world, but this move fits with Hulu’s recent strategy. Rather than committing to a full season right away, the platform is taking the pilot-first route, giving it a chance to see what works before going all in. If something isn’t working, tweaks can be made early without the cost of producing an entire season.
The reboot features Patel and Danielle Deadwyler in lead roles, stepping into a world made famous by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Like the original series, the story will center on investigations involving paranormal events and unexplained mysteries. Coogler wrote and is directing the pilot, while Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner. Original creator Chris Carter is also attached as an executive producer.
The cast also includes Steve Buscemi, Tantoo Cardinal, Lochlyn Munro, Amy Madigan, Devery Jacobs, Sofia Grace Clifton and Joel Montgrand. Filming is already underway in Vancouver.
