Nick Frost opened up about his views on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s controversial opinions in a recent interview with The Times.

The actor, who plays Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, told the outlet that his views differ significantly from Rowling’s on transgender issues. “She’s allowed her opinion, and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any shape or form,” Frost said. He added that he cannot control external matters and only knows what he feels. “No one is ever going to be happy all the time,” the actor stated.

Frost also discussed his unique approach to landing the iconic role of Rubeus Hagrid. The Shaun of the Dead star claimed he manifested the part by writing Hagrid’s name down 8,000 times. The actor has undergone a significant personal transformation before securing this career-defining opportunity. Frost is now sober, eight stone lighter, and actively creating art alongside his acting career.

Beyond the casting process, Frost revealed his creative vision for the beloved half-giant character. He draws inspiration from Michael Clarke Duncan’s John Coffey in The Green Mile as a reference point. Frost described the character archetype as “huge, violent but childlike” in his interpretation. He acknowledged that his portrayal will expand on what the late Robbie Coltrane originally established onscreen.

Frost emphasized his commitment to honoring Coltrane’s legacy while bringing fresh depth to Hagrid. “I’ve tried to take what Robbie did and honor that,” Frost explained to The Times. However, he noted that eight episodes per season allow far more exploration than a single film did. “Some people won’t like it. They’ll go, ‘Not my Hagrid.’ And that is all right,” Frost admitted.

HBO’s Harry Potter series premieres on December 25.
