A popular Xbox video game is confirmed to get a live-action movie from the director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The live-service game was originally released back in 2018.
What video game movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Destin Daniel Cretton working on?
Sea of Thieves, the famous open-world video game from Xbox, will receive a live-action movie adaptation, reports Entertainment Weekly. What makes the project special is its connection with Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton. He will produce the Sea of Thieves movie through his multimedia production company, Hisako.
Daniel Cretton, who previously directed MCU’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings movie, has helmed the upcoming Spider-Man film as well, featuring Tom Holland in the titular role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Speaking of the Sea of Thieves movie, there has yet to be an announcement of a director. As for the live-service game, it was launched eight years ago and is developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios. Players explore a vast open world as pirates, embark on voyages, and search for treasure.
Originally, the game was only available on PC and Xbox consoles. Later, it also made its way to the PlayStation 5 in 2024.
The upcoming Sea of Thieves movie is just one of the Xbox projects lined up for live-action adaptations. Following the success of last year’s A Minecraft Movie, its sequel, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, is on its way as well. A Minecraft animated series from Netflix will also arrive in the future.
Plus, a live-action movie and animated series are in the works at Netflix based on the Gears of War franchise. Then there is the live-action Wolfenstein TV show, which is currently in development at Amazon.
As for the Sea of Thieves live-action movie, it has yet to receive an official release date window.
