Tim Allen wants his Toy Story 5 co-star Tom Hanks to appear in Galaxy Quest 2. The actor reprises his role as Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming Toy Story sequel.
Tim Allen wants Tom Hanks in potential Galaxy Quest sequel
Speaking to MovieWeb, Allen said he wants Tom Hanks to play one of the Thermians in a potential sequel. The actor believes Hanks would be great as a Thermian leader, similar to Enrico Colantoni’s Mathesar.
“[Tom] would have to learn Mathesar’s language,” Allen said. In response, Hanks had his own take on what kind of character he would want to play in Galaxy Quest 2. “I would like to be a [character who would say] ‘Who are these puny humans that are in my way?'” said Hanks. “If I could have that line… [that would] keep something really going on.”
Galaxy Quest was released in 1999 and grossed over $90 million at the box office, almost double its budget. The film, directed by Dean Parisot, has since gained a cult following, owing to its proximity to the tone of space parodies like Spaceballs. Talks of a sequel have followed since, but no real project has materialized as of 2026.
In the same interview, Allen and Hanks also discussed the number of deleted outtakes, with both expressing hope for their release alongside a director’s cut. Sigourney Weaver has also expressed her wish for a Galaxy Quest director’s cut.
We’ve tried this so many different ways,” Allen said. “I don’t know what to say, Amazon had it, and they wanted to put a series together. We had some very clever ideas on how it would end up, and unfortunately, Alan passed. It was his son who was supposed to carry on his legacy. There were so many outtakes. Director Dean Parisot added to it and shot it as though it was a History Channel special… It was very hard to explain how organic that was. Our outtakes were just ridiculous, stupid stuff that didn’t make the cut, like a scene with swearing.”
The film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special 4K release. A Galaxy Quest TV series was also in the works for Paramount+, but nothing came of that.
