A new Spider-Man: Brand New Day clip proves Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal might be the MCU’s most exciting pairing yet. The footage reveals the real-life bond and on-set dynamic that shaped Spider-Man and Punisher’s relationship in the upcoming film.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day footage shows Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal’s ‘unmatched chemistry’
The official Spider-Man Movie account on X shared new footage from Spider-Man: Brand New Day on June 19. The clip highlights the dynamic between Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal on set. The post described their pairing as “unmatched chemistry” and confirmed the film arrives in theatres July 31.
Holland and Bernthal share a longstanding personal connection that predates their MCU roles. Holland revealed that he has known Bernthal since he was 17 years old. “We were in Ireland together when he was first auditioning for Spider-Man,” Holland said.
He added that Bernthal made his Spider-Man audition tape, and Holland made Bernthal’s first Punisher audition tape. “If anybody could have come and told us then that we’d be here now, I just think we’d be so thrilled,” Holland said.
Holland expressed his enthusiasm about finally sharing the screen with Bernthal in these iconic roles. “There’s always been a drive for me to share the screen with him in these characters,” Holland said. He added that getting to do it now, “in this movie, is so exciting.” The footage also showed a humorous exchange between their characters during an action sequence.
Holland explained that their on-screen relationship evolved organically during filming. “When we got to set, and Jon and I started riffing, it kind of became this really funny big brother, little brother type relationship,” Holland said. He noted that director Destin Daniel Cretton “kind of just let us run with it.” Cretton praised the actors’ natural rapport throughout the production process.
Cretton highlighted the spontaneous nature of their performances together. “The type of chemistry that these two have bubbles up in unexpected ways that cannot be written,” Cretton said. He called capturing those unscripted moments his “favorite rush” on set.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and Mark Ruffalo.
