Joe Russo Explains Why Doomsday Won’t Feel Like Previous Avengers Movies

Joe Russo has opened up about how Avengers: Doomsday will not be like previous Avengers films in the MCU. The director explained how they managed to raise the bar even higher with Doomsday set to hit theaters later this year.

Joe Russo says Avengers: Doomsday will be the ‘most mature of all of them’

In a recent interview with CBR, both Robert Downey Jr. and Joe Russo spoke about their previous Marvel movies and Avengers: Doomsday. During their conversation, the co-director of the upcoming installment shared that it will be different than any other previous entries in the MCU.

“There are a lot of surprises in this,” the director said. “And I think (Doomsday is) the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.”

The Emmy-winning director said that making Doomsday was more difficult than the other ones. However, he added that “emotional complexity is always the answer.” He believes that incorporating emotional complexities in the story enriches it, making it a “fuller experience for the audience.”

Joe and his brother, Anthony, have helmed some of the most celebrated and complex MCU movies. Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame have not only been great superhero movies but also had a strong emotional impact. However, the franchise has been struggling since Endgame’s release in 2019.

Meanwhile, Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. He said what’s happening in it, and going forward, is likely the only way to avoid disappointing fans. “And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down,” he added.

The Iron Man star also added “an incredible amount of gratitude” went into making Avengers: Doomsday and next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars. “One epic at a time. Doomsday… just the gratitude to be able to do it. To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right,” the Oscar-winning actor shared.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
