Apple TV’s hit crime drama is leaning towards an unexpected genre in Season 2. The majority of the first season was grounded and serious in tone. But after the shocking twist in Sugar Season 1, the show now has more leeway for incorporating other genres.
Sugar Season 2 adds more comedy to Colin Farrell’s sci-fi detective story
Sugar was one of Apple TV’s standout shows in 2024. What started as a gritty detective show expanded its scope with sci-fi elements. Now, co-showrunner-writer Sam Catlin has shared that Season 2 will feature more comedy.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Catlin assured that Sugar Season 2 won’t be a complete change in genre. Instead, the comedic elements would be subtle and a part of the titular character’s persona. This allows them to expand on the “levity” that Season 1 showcased.
“Colin is obviously comedically genius, right? We weren’t worried that he was going to be able to do it, but it had to be done in a way that didn’t feel like we were changing the entire tone of the show. But that I think some of his humor comes from him being a little bit on the back foot in certain places,” he said.
The Primetime Emmy-winning writer also expressed his “relief” that they no longer have to hide the sci-fi parts of the show.
For context, the Apple TV show centers on John Sugar, played by Colin Farrell, who takes on a job to find a Hollywood producer’s missing granddaughter. Over the course of the first season, the show reveals that John is a part of an alien species. When an unknown person threatens to expose their existence, most of them leave the planet. However, John chooses to stay.
Farrell explained that his character is confident and somewhat “unflappable.” However, he can’t handle himself during interactions with Charlotte (Laura Donnelly), a character who will be introduced in Season 2. The actor explained that John feels like “he’s lost at sea a little bit” with her.
The Penguin star also explained that the scenes, for him, carry “sweetness” more than being funny. “There was a sweetness that you could explore in those scenes with her,” he added.
Sugar Season 2 will premiere on June 19 on Apple TV.
