Producer Rob Tapert shares new Evil Dead Wrath details

Producer Robert Tapert recently revealed new details about Evil Dead Wrath in an appearance at Michigan State University, as reported by Dread Central.

Director Francis Galluppi helms the installment, which serves as a prequel set before the original 1981 horror film. “This is yet another great departure,” Tapert said of the next entry into Sam Raimi’s franchise. “It predates everything. It takes place in 1972.”

The 1972 setting takes the story back before Ash and his friends encountered the Book of the Dead. The film currently targets an April 7, 2028, theatrical premiere. Galluppi previously directed The Last Stop in Yuma County, which Tapert praised as a film he “liked a great deal.”

Tapert also teased that the film will visually replicate the look of the early 1970s. “It will feel like a 1972 movie because the director and his DP want to imitate the film’s look and feel of something that’s called Ektachrome 100, which was a film stock,” Tapert explained. He described the visual palette as “very warm, very tungsten.”

The producer also contrasted Galluppi’s deliberate style with Sebastien Vanicek’s handheld approach on Evil Dead Burn. “Two entirely different filmmakers, one that shoots everything on a 110-millimeter lens handheld, always moving, always shaking, and the other one is very Tarantino-esque, very deliberate,” Tapert said. Evil Dead Burn premieres on July 10 in US theaters.

Tapert additionally hinted that Wrath will introduce coming-of-age elements new to the franchise. “That one, unlike Burn, has a lot of coming-of-age sexual hijinks in it, which people at the universe is not really known for, but this one does,” he said.
