Supergirl Director Discusses Potentially Helming DCU Wonder Woman Movie

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie hasn’t ruled out helming the DCU’s upcoming Wonder Woman film. The I, Tonya director is helming the first female-led superhero movie from DC Studios.

What did Craig Gillespie say about Wonder Woman?

When asked if he would like to helm Wonder Woman, Gillespie told Omelete, “Who knows… I would love the opportunity to work on anything that is so beautifully written like this film. Ana did an excellent job and this is such a strong and well-defined character. And also, I knew when I got into this that Milly was going to be playing Supergirl. So I couldn’t have been more excited. And it was a great partnership.”

Supergirl was written by Ana Nogueira, who is also currently writing a script for Wonder Woman. Nogueira was also previously attached to write a Supergirl film in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, which would have starred Sasha Calle as the Girl of Steel. Nogueira has also written a Teen Titans movie set in the DCU, though there has been no update on that project in over a year.

Gillespie’s comments don’t point to any real discussions about directing a Wonder Woman film. However, filmmakers are always tight-lipped about potential future gigs when it comes to major IP-driven tentpole films.

Besides a Wonder Woman film, the DCU will dive deeper into the character’s home turf in Paradise Lost, a TV show currently in development. The series will dive into the political intrigue among the residents of Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s birthplace. The show recently received a promising update, pointing to a release closer than previously expected.

Supergirl will join Superman in next year’s Man of Tomorrow, with Milly Alcock reprising the role. This year’s Supergirl film is based on Tom King’s hit graphic novel, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
