X-Men ’97 Season 2 reviews have handed Marvel one of its biggest wins on Rotten Tomatoes. The animated series’ new season is already rewriting the record books for critical reception across the franchise.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 reviews lead to Marvel’s best Rotten Tomatoes score
X-Men ’97 Season 2 currently holds a perfect 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. The score comes from 13 critic reviews, according to the review aggregator. This ties it with other Marvel shows holding a perfect score on the platform right now.
The score also surpasses Season 1’s already impressive 99% Tomatometer rating from 81 reviews. Season 1 earned a Certified Fresh badge and a 91% Popcornmeter audience score. Season 2 does not yet have an audience score listed on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised the show’s animation quality, storytelling, and portrayal of Apocalypse as the central villain. Collider’s Aidan Kelley gave it 8/10 and called it “a Marvel fan’s dream come true through and through.” IGN’s Jesse Schedeen scored it 9/10 and said the show “remains as thrilling as ever in the first four episodes of Season 2.” Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky wrote that “Season 2 somehow tops Season 1” and that “Apocalypse is brought to the screen brilliantly.”
Several reviewers also drew favorable comparisons to the live-action X-Men films. GamesRadar+’s Lauren Milici noted the show “does Apocalypse better than the live-action X-Men: Apocalypse movie.” ComicBook.com’s Simon Gallagher echoed this, stating the season “delivers a great story worthy of the villain.” The show is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but exists as a standalone animated continuation.
Notably, X-Men ’97 is a revival of the original X-Men: The Animated Series that aired from 1992 to 1997. Marvel Studios Animation currently produces the series, with Jake Castorena as supervising director.
Meanwhile, Season 2 premieres on Disney+ on July 1, 2026, and will consist of nine episodes. The season ultimately sees the X-Men scattered throughout time as they face Apocalypse across different eras.
