Jason Momoa gave a brief, humorous reaction when asked about the prospect of someone else playing Aquaman in the DCU. Notably, the sea-based superhero has not yet debuted in the franchise.
What Jason Momoa said about Aquaman’s future in the DCU
Momoa recently sat down with CinemaBlend to promote Supergirl. During the interview, the outlet asked the actor, who plays Lobo in the movie, about his thoughts on someone else potentially playing Aquaman in the DCU.
Embodying the energy of the manic alien bounty hunter, Momoa joked, “Well, I’d have them taken out.” Quickly shifting to a more serious tone, he added, “I think there’s some space. You never know. I mean, s–t, I’m Lobo right now. Anything’s gotta be possible.”
Aquaman currently hasn’t been cast in the DCU. This will remain the case for at least a while, according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. In an appearance on Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz last year, the filmmaker said that fans wouldn’t see either him or The Flash for “the next two years.”
Meanwhile, Momoa believed his Aquaman and Lobo could interact, bringing up co-CEO Peter Safran’s involvement in the production of the films centered around the former. He shared, “I think the cool thing is, Peter Safran was at the helm with James Wan when I was doing Aquaman. And I think James [Wan] and James [Gunn] get along very well. I’m sure in a world, something like that might exist.”
Furthermore, he elaborated on the logic behind his Aquaman and Lobo co-existing. He pointed out that James Wan brought a fresh take to the former’s portrayal, distinct from Zack Snyder’s depiction of him in Justice League. Momoa continued, “You know what I mean? And he really wanted to change what Aquaman was like.”
Highlighting the difference between Wan and Snyder’s versions of the character, he said, “That’s something I had to navigate to keep like that essence of what Zack’s idea was, and then having to go into this bright, beautiful world of James’ in a different way and balance that.”
The Dune star concluded, “And now, of course, it’s a possibility that he can. It’s not really in Zack’s [world] as much, and I think he could.”
