After the box office disappointment of The Bride!, Maggie Gyllenhaal is already moving toward a dramatically different project. This time, it takes her into the world of espionage, dark humor, and political intrigue.
Maggie Gyllenhaal to adapt Rachel Kushner’s Creation Lake next
Warner Bros. is continuing its collaboration with Maggie Gyllenhaal despite the commercial performance of The Bride!, signaling continued confidence in her creative direction as a filmmaker.
According to reports from Variety, the studio has acquired the rights to Rachel Kushner’s acclaimed novel Creation Lake, with plans for Gyllenhaal to direct and produce the adaptation.
The story follows Sadie Smith, a thirty-four-year-old American operative assigned to infiltrate an eco-activist collective in France. Using manipulation, intelligence, and carefully constructed identities, Sadie gradually embeds herself into the group. However, as her mission unfolds, she begins questioning both her assignment and the beliefs she once accepted without hesitation.
Creation Lake gained attention as a bestselling novel and earned recognition across major literary circles. Critics praised the book for blending dark humor with themes of identity, politics, and personal transformation while maintaining the tension of a spy thriller.
The announcement arrives shortly after The Bride! generated intense discussion across audiences and critics. Gyllenhaal’s reinterpretation of the classic Bride of Frankenstein mythology divided opinions with its stylized approach and feminist themes. The film, led by Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, struggled commercially and reportedly earned around $24 million worldwide against a significantly larger production budget.
Critical reception for the bride remained mixed. While some reviewers viewed the project as “a failed experiment,” others appreciated its unconventional storytelling and artistic risks. The film currently holds a moderate critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Before the Bride!, Gyllenhaal earned widespread acclaim for The Lost Daughter, her directorial debut adapted from Elena Ferrante’s novel. The film secured three Academy Award nominations, including recognition for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Adding to her recent momentum, Gyllenhaal is also scheduled to receive the President’s Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
At the time of writing, Warner Bros. has not revealed casting details, filming locations, or a release date for Creation Lake.
