Supergirl Isn’t Just Different From Superman, She Doesn’t Need Him Either

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl doesn’t need Superman. The actor built her take on Kara Zor-El without leaning on the Man of Steel, a choice that defines the DC Universe’s upcoming movie. It’s directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Her performance comes after a brief introduction in David Corenswet’s 2025 Superman film.

Alcock revealed that distancing Kara from her famous cousin was not an act of rebellion but a foundation for an authentic portrayal. “I think for me, the way that I approached Kara was just so independently of Clark, and that’s what made those scenes when I did get the opportunity to work with David so exciting, because I understood that there was natural friction between the two of them,” Alcock told Screenrant.

That friction, she suggests, comes precisely because neither character exists merely as an extension of the other. “She desires his freedom within himself that she doesn’t have. She really struggles to be who she is and I think she sees that Clark can move through the world being exactly who he is without being interfered  by his own personal demons and I think she’s jealous of that,” she told ComicBook.

Nogueira echoed that sentiment when describing the tonal gap between the heroes. Superman, she noted, has occupied the public imagination for decades, carrying a fixed set of expectations. Kara offered fresher ground.

“Oh, it was so much fun. I mean, Superman’s voice and who he is, I think, has just been in our collective psyche for so long, since childhood. And then Kara was just always kind of in my heart,” Nogueira explained.

Corenswet reportedly appears only sparingly in Supergirl. His scenes are largely confined to flashbacks showing Kara’s arrival on Earth, alongside a video call seen in trailers where he asks when she will return. The restraint is deliberate, mirroring how her own cameo in Superman remained brief.

Moreover, James Gunn confirmed that Milly Alcock will feature prominently in Man of Tomorrow, currently in production. For now, Supergirl releases in cinemas on June 26.
