George Lucas Says Steven Spielberg & Harrison Ford Opposed Divisive Indy 4 Twist

George Lucas opened up about creative clashes with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford during Indiana Jones 4. He revealed that the duo opposed adding the alien element. He noted that Spielberg set the condition that the aliens be portrayed as beings from another dimension, which helped them eventually find common ground.

Why Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford opposed Indiana Jones 4’s alien twist

In a conversation with Vulture, Lucas opened up about how the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull alien twist came together following creative differences.

He recalled that he wanted the 2008 movie to have a War of the Worlds element. However, Ford and Spielberg didn’t agree with that idea. “Harrison said, ‘I’m not going to do another science-fiction movie.’ And Steven said, ‘I’m not going to do another science-fiction movie,'” Lucas said.

He revealed that he tried to convince Spielberg of the alien twist, as he found it suitable for the movie’s set timeline. “I said, ‘Steven, this is perfect because it’s the 1950s, when flying saucers were a whole thing,'” he said. However, he was met with a firm “no” from the director.

Despite the initial disapproval, Lucas mentioned that the two managed to reach a compromise, with Spielberg putting forward a condition. “We did about five scripts, and finally Steve and I compromised: ‘Look, what if they’re not aliens but from another dimension,'” he continued.

While Spielberg didn’t want to lean too heavily on the alien aspect, Lucas noted that it was Spielberg who proposed the final shot featuring a circular vehicle resembling a spaceship. “He was rationalizing it by saying, ‘Well, they’re going to another dimension. They have to get there somehow.’ I said, ‘It looks like a flying saucer,'” Lucas said.

He also pointed out that despite Ford and Spielberg firmly stating they wouldn’t do sci-fi again, both eventually did.
