‘I’d Be Dead’: Jason Momoa Explains Key Lobo Costume Choice in Supergirl

Jason Momoa has revealed a prop choice saved his life in Supergirl. One of the few actors to have successfully transitioned from the now-defunct DCEU to the DCU, Momoa will be seen as Lobo in Supergirl. Playing an alien mercenary and bounty hunter in the upcoming film, he previously portrayed Aquaman from 2016 to 2023.

The official synopsis of Supergirl reads, “Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, joins forces with an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home.” The film stars Milly Alcock in the titular role, while Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Momoa support her. The superhero flick is directed by Craig Gillespie.

What did Jason Momoa say about his Lobo costume in Supergirl?

Jason Momoa, while speaking to SiriusXM as part of the Supergirl promotional run, was asked about the look of Lobo. While responding, the beloved star let the host in on a prop choice that would’ve left him dead, had he not followed through. He also revealed that the chains the character wore were real, and he took all of his Supergirl props once filming had wrapped.

“The cigar was important. Now that I’m a bigger guy, I got the muscle and the hair and everything… (I) go to the cigar shop. What’s the biggest? They tell me this Cuban, and it’s called a Double Mario. I said, ‘No, it’s not. It’s called the Lobo. Gimme the goddamn thing.’ So, (I) take it. It’s massive. I go into props. I’m like, ‘I need this, and I need you to build me one that’s going to constantly be (lit).’ I’ll have a stroke if I’m smoking that thing the whole time. Like, literally be stroking out. So, they would make a cigar that would pull vape so you have the actual smoke come out, and it would light up at the end… Cos otherwise it’d be a nightmare. It isn’t real tobacco cos I’d be dead.”

Jason Momoa revealed that he had tried smoking real cigars throughout a shoot while in Canada. He then disclosed that an ambulance had to be summoned, as he felt like he was having a stroke.

Supergirl is slated to release in theaters on June 26, 2026.
