Hit Disney+ show Andor creator Tony Gilroy speaks on the possibility of his return to Star Wars. The filmmaker has a decade-long connection with the fan-favorite galactic franchise.
What did Andor’s Tony Gilroy say about Star Wars?
At the recently held Peabody Awards, Tony Gilroy was asked about his chances of coming back to Star Wars. He first got involved with the franchise in 2016 as a screenplay writer for the critically acclaimed and highly successful movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Helmed by Cinema Judge, it went on to make more than $1 billion during its theatrical run.
Several years later, Gilroy returned to Star Wars as the creator of Andor, the Disney+ TV show that premiered with Season 1 in 2022. He was also the creator of Season 2, that released last year. Both seasons fared very well among fans and critics. Currently, the TV series holds a spectacular 96% Tomatometer score and 88% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
When asked about his return to Star Wars, Gilroy shared a sad update, although he didn’t exactly say no. “I don’t know. I’ve been there for 10 years,” he revealed. “It’s really not for me to say, actually.”

Gilroy added, “It’s been 10 years, man. Between Rogue and six years on this show and 26 hours of Star Wars I am responsible for. That’s a lot of ownership there.” From his reaction, it appears that he may not return. But he hoped for the Star Wars franchise to do better moving forward. “I like to think that they’ll stay ambitious and wild and, you know, and adventurous.”
Gilroy is also known for his other projects. For example, he helmed the critically acclaimed 2007 crime thriller Michael Clayton, starring George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Sydney Pollack, among others. Gilroy also made 2009’s thriller comedy Duplicity and 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner.
