Scary Movie 7 Needs to Fix 1 Major Issue That Made 6 Divisive

Scary Movie 7 seems like a safe bet following the success of 6. Should another sequel be made though, it should fix one major issue from the latest release.

Following the release of the new parody horror film, Scary Movie 6 has had a great time at the box office. The latest entry in the franchise opened to $55 million domestically, and a whopping $105.5 million globally. While a sequel hasn’t been announced, it seems all but guaranteed following the film’s box office success.

However, should a seventh movie be made, there are some things to fix. Specifically, the movie that is chosen as the main spoof should be something that isn’t as old as the one chosen in 6.

Scary Movie 7 needs to stay modern in its overarching story

For those unaware, Scary Movie 6, while parodying a ton of other movies in the horror genre, largely acts as a spoof of 2022’s Scream 5. The movie follows the story of Tuesday Campbell and her older sister Sara, spoofs of Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera’s sisters, as they try to uncover the return of Ghostface all these years later.

As a whole, the spoof works for the point of the new Scary Movie. Throughout the movie, the jokes largely center around the fact that this new Scary Movie is the first that the Wayans have been involved with since Scary Movie 2. As a result, the culmination of the movie sees the franchise’s original stars, as well as the Wayans, coming together for a big moment.

While the new movie spoofing Scream 5 does make some sense, it also hurt the movie in a way. As a Scream movie, Scream 5 is already two movies ago in that franchise, and almost five years old as a movie itself. The Scary Movie franchise is one known for referencing more new movies as its released, making the larger story feel extremely dated in this one. While Scary Movie 6 does spoof a ton of present-day/recent movies throughout its runtime, including things like Nosferatu, the Michael Jackson movie, The Substance, and more, using Scream 5 as the backbone of the story leaves things feeling not as new as it should.

On top of that, the film’s use of Scream 5 goes for more of a meta approach than anything. Much of the humor of spoofing Scream 5 is to use it as a meta commentary on the fact that, for years, the Wayans have been gone from the Scary Movie franchise. While this is largely well-known, it also could leave some audiences confused as to the overall message. As a return to the franchise it worked, but hopefully in the eventual next film, a more modern horror movie is chosen.
