Lisa Kudrow‘s popular movie from the late 1990s is officially coming back. The news has been confirmed with latest set photos featuring the former Friends star alongside another acclaimed actress.
What beloved Lisa Kudrow comedy movie is finally getting a sequel?
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino‘s iconic 1997 screwball comedy movie Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is getting a sequel. There were reports of a second part last year, but now it’s official, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 2 is now in production, according to the set photo released on social media by 20th Century Studios. The filming of the sequel began last Friday. Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) is serving as the director on the second installment. Federle previously worked with Kudrow on 2022’s Better Nate Than Never, in which she played a supporting role.
Robin Schiff wrote the screenplay for the sequel and also wrote the original film. Schiff is also known for her work on Netflix’s Emily in Paris series.
What’s changed with the second movie is that it won’t arrive in theaters like its predecessor. Instead, the sequel will release directly for streaming as a Hulu Original, on Hulu and Disney+.
Besides Kudrow and Sorvino, the sequel will also bring back Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby, and Julia Campbell as Christie. New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham. The details on their roles are currently under wraps.
Speaking more of the original movie, it was a modest hit, earning around $29 million at the box office. On Rotten Tomatoes, however, it currently holds a solid Tomatometer score of 76%. It was only later that the film managed to grow into a cult classic among the moviegoers. It’s currently available to stream on Hulu.
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 2 has yet to receive an official release date window.
