The Boys killed off multiple characters throughout its five-season run, but the creator holds regret for eliminating a particular villain. In a recent interview, Eric Kripke said he would have kept them around beyond one season had it not been for the actor’s contract.
Eric Kripke regrets killing off Madelyn Stillwell in The Boys
Eric Kripke expressed regret for killing off Madelyn Stillwell at the end of The Boys Season 1 as he viewed her as a “great villain.”
While interacting with Screenrant, the Supernatural creator admitted that if he could go back and change the writing, he would keep Elisabeth Shue’s character alive. He then recalled how he landed on the decision to kill her off in the first place.
Kripke said that in the beginning, the actress told him she was willing to appear only in one season. “I’m like, ‘Okay, we’ll kill you off at the end.’ We kill her off at the end,” he added.
The showrunner continued, saying that the Adventures in Babysitting actress was surprised by her character’s fate and asked him why he killed off Stillwell. “Like, ‘Why did I kill you off?’ It was the contractual deal,” he said of his response to her question. “Like, if I had known that we didn’t have to kill you off, I’d have kept you around. You’re a great villain.”
He concluded by revealing that Shue still gave him grief for killing Stillwell. “So she still gives me s—t about it,” he shared. “She’s like, ‘I can’t believe you killed me off.’ I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?'”
In the interview, Kripke also shared regret for killing off Splinter, played by Rob Benedict, who appeared in a recurring capacity in Supernatural. He added that the character could have been explored further beyond his appearance in the Season 4 episode, “Life Among the Septics,” in which Billy Butcher kills him.
All episodes of The Boys are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who serve as executive producers.
