Chris Mundy teased Sinestro’s role in Lanterns. The showrunner hinted that the HBO series will explore the complex connection between Sinestro and Hal Jordan while shaping some of the story’s biggest conflicts.
Chris Mundy details Sinestro and Hal Jordan’s dynamic in Lanterns
According to Entertainment Weekly, Chris Mundy explained that Lanterns centers on Hal Jordan mentoring John Stewart while confronting Sinestro’s influence. Mundy said, “Hal was trained by Sinestro, Hal is training John.”
He added, “In the coaching tree, we’re very interested in what gets passed on, what doesn’t.” Moreover, Mundy connected the relationship to “programming and parenting and training.” He also questioned, “What did Hal take away from Sinestro that was good or bad?”
Furthermore, Mundy described John Stewart as an anomaly within the Green Lantern Corps. The Guardians of the Universe directly selected John instead of allowing a ring to choose him naturally. Meanwhile, Hal originally became a Lantern after Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth. Mundy explained that “there was never meant to be a Green Lantern of Earth.” Consequently, Hal resents John’s unusual recruitment and reluctantly mentors him during the investigation in Rushville, Nebraska.
Meanwhile, Mundy emphasized the tension between Hal and John throughout the series. He described their dynamic as “the old guard and the heir apparent.” Additionally, John serves as the backup Lantern if Hal can no longer continue. Mundy stated, “We lean into that tension quite a bit in that early time period.” Therefore, the mentorship carries professional pressure and personal conflict across the show’s timelines.
Additionally, Sinestro’s legacy shapes Hal’s fears about training his successor. Ulrich Thomsen portrays Sinestro, although Mundy avoided confirming the character’s larger role. Mundy acknowledged, “Obviously in the canon, Sinestro’s the big bad.”
However, the series examines how Sinestro’s methods influenced Hal’s leadership and judgment. Consequently, the relationship between Hal and John reflects inherited lessons, conflicting values, and generational responsibility within the Lantern Corps.
