Backstory of Rowan Robinson’s Red in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Explained

Ira Parker has finally shed light on one of the intriguing characters in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Rowan Robinson’s Red may have seemed like a minor presence at first, but the showrunner says there is real thought behind her arc. The reveal connects her to a bigger Westeros legacy.

The Season 1 finale drops a subtle but meaningful twist. Red, the quick-tongued sex worker who keeps crossing paths with Ser Duncan, ultimately marries Ser Raymun Fossoway. The reveal confirms she later becomes Lady Rowan Fossoway and the founding matriarch of the Green Apple Fossoway branch. Parker said much of that arc happens off-screen on purpose.

While speaking to Decider, he explained that he likes layering in backstories that quietly make sense within the world. “Look, there’s a lot of stuff that happens off-screen because obviously we’re just solely in Dunk’s POV, but what I really love doing is making up whole backstories of what the characters would have done,” he said.

After Raymun fought on the winning side of the Trial of Seven and earned his knighthood, the young knight carried new confidence but also a sense of isolation. In Parker’s view, that emotional opening made Red’s move feel organic and believable within the narrative.

The showrunner also highlighted Raymun’s pure-hearted nature. Parker suggested the young knight is so earnest that after spending the night with Red, he would instantly see marriage as the only honorable move. Parker explained, “He’s so sincere that I believe that as soon as they have sex once and she says, ‘You know, I’m with child now.’ He says, ‘Well, of course you are because that’s just how sex works. And so we have to get married.’”

Further, the showrunner stressed that the relationship “is all coming out of character.” Viewers only catch glimpses of it because the story stays tightly framed through Dunk’s perspective.

Parker also addressed the name change, revealing why Red goes with Rowan later in the series. He explained that Rowan is simply Red’s “more formal, ladylike version.”

It seems the new name carries extra weight within Westeros history and lines up neatly with House Fossoway’s orchard-rooted legacy. He added that the choice felt optimistic, noting the noble family begins with what he described as “an up-jumped squire and a prostitute.” “Anyway, it seemed like fun, and when I pitched it to George, he laughed. So it was a positive sign,” Parker shared.
