HBO Harry Potter’s Draco Malfoy Actor Says Character Won’t Be ‘2D’ in Reboot

The upcoming Harry Potter HBO series is already shaping up to be a very different take on J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, and one of its newest cast members is offering the clearest hint yet about how the reboot will expand beyond both the films and the original novels. Lox Pratt, who will play Draco Malfoy, says the HBO adaptation goes far beyond Harry’s point of view.

Lox Pratt explains how new HBO series is different from books and films

At just 14, Lox Pratt is set to become a major face of the new Harry Potter series, which is scheduled to premiere on HBO in early 2027. The long-form adaptation is planned to run for seven seasons, with each season adapting one of the Harry Potter books. According to Pratt, the extended format is key to what makes this version stand apart.

Speaking about his role as Draco Malfoy, Pratt explained to 1883 magazine that the series allows viewers to see far more than what was possible in earlier adaptations. “I think with this adaptation, you get to see so much more than the books. [The books] are very much over Harry’s shoulder, which is great, and that’s how they played the film as well,” Pratt said. “There’s just so much more that you get to see. You get to see all the teachers in their little rooms. You get to see Draco at home.”

Pratt added that these new scenes offer insight into why Draco behaves the way he does, something he feels was missing before. “In the films, Draco is sort of 2D; he is the sneery villain. I feel like there’s so much more – you need to understand why,” he said, noting that the series will explore those layers in greater depth.

With more time to tell the story and room to develop characters beyond Harry’s perspective, the new HBO series aims to give longtime fans and new viewers a deeper, more expansive version of the wizarding world they thought they already knew.
