Fan-Shipped General Hospital Characters Become Lovers but Stars Tease Trouble

Fans finally saw Emma Scorpio-Drake and Gio Palmieri take the next step on General Hospital, but the actors say tougher moments are still ahead.

On the January 15 episode of General Hospital, Emma Scorpio-Drake and Gio Palmieri took their relationship to the next level and became lovers for the first time. Their pairing, often called Gemma by fans, has been building for months.

Actors Giovanni Mazza — who plays Gio — and Braedyn Bruner — who plays Emma — spoke about the their storyline in a new interview with Swooon, sharing why the slow buildup mattered. Bruner said she loved that the show didn’t rush their intimacy.

She explained that taking time made the story feel more real and helped it connect with viewers. She said, “I wouldn’t change anything about it because I think it really resonates with the audience that we’re not rushing anything.”

Bruner said that fans will enjoy what follows, especially the morning-after conversations between Emma and Gio, calling them some of her favorite scenes. “I love the conversations that we have the morning after. I think those are some of my favorite scenes that we’ve done so far.”

For both actors, it was their first on-screen love scene, but Giovanni Mazza said a respectful set made it comfortable. “It was really private… everyone was very respectful,” he said. Their off-screen friendship also helped.

Bruner said, “We feel very safe with one another,” adding that without that trust, filming intimate scenes could feel “terrifying or uncomfortable.” Even so, the actors made it clear that smooth sailing won’t last. Mazza hinted that Emma faces a tough year ahead filled with ups and downs.

He explained, “I think it was necessary to solidify their relationship so that she has this rock that she can always come to because I think she’s just going to go to new heights, on a journey of ups and downs, and hopefully he will be there every step of the way.”

While Emma and Gio are closer than ever, fans should expect plenty of drama as their story continues on General Hospital.
