9-1-1 Creator Breaks Silence on Why Peter Krause’s Bobby Had To Die

9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear has broken his silence on one of the show’s most talked-about Season 8 decisions. Ahead of the season 9 premiere, Minear addressed why Peter Krause’s character, Bobby Nash, was written off the long-running procedural.

In an interview with The Washington Post, 9-1-1 co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear explained the reasoning behind the decision to kill off Robert “Bobby” Nash, played by Peter Krause. Minear confirmed the move was influenced by both creative and financial factors: “I really felt creatively the show needed something to kind of shake it up, and the reason Bobby died was because, if I was going to do this, I wanted it to be a character that would affect all the characters’ stories.”

Bobby died in Season 8 while sacrificing himself to save fellow 118 team member Howard “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi). The show killed off a main character for the first time in its eight-season run. Minear also cited industry-wide budget constraints as a driving factor behind the decision. “You’ll see this across the board on network shows, where they start culling the cast and culling the production and trying to make things more affordable so you can keep making the show,” Minear said.

Minear admitted to having personal difficulty with the decision. “I have tons of regret about it. I still think it was the right move. But it’s been really wrenching for me,” he added. The showrunner cited examples like Grey’s Anatomy and FBI, noting that producers have reduced cast appearances to manage production costs while keeping the core ensemble intact.

After Bobby’s death, Howard took over as captain of the 118. Viewers have had mixed reactions, with some criticizing the show’s turn toward a darker tone. The shift has allowed remaining cast members such as Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Aisha Hinds, Oliver Stark, and Ryan Guzman to receive more screen time.

9-1-1 Season 9 airs Thursdays at 8 PM ET on ABC.
