Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K Review: Apple TV Show Charms in UHD

Ted Lasso became Apple TV+’s first phenomenon. From the mind of the hilarious Jason Sudeikis, the series follows a struggling football club and an inexperienced coach’s unexpected success. While an unexpected fourth season is on the way, the first three seasons are now available to own in ultra high-definition in the Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K set.

“In a bitter divorce settlement from her husband, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) becomes the new owner of AFC Richmond, a struggling Premier League football team. Her first order of business is to fire the team’s current manager and replace him with a small-time American football coach, Theodore “Ted” Lasso (Jason Sudeikis). Ted and assistant Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) cross the pond to manage the team. Richmond is about to change the way they do things. From now on, it’s the Lasso way,” says the official synopsis.

The optimism and positivity of Sudeikis’ titular character felt like a much-needed warm hug when Ted Lasso initially aired. That first season is still my favorite, although the second and third seasons still have plenty of fun. Featuring a stacked cast, the series features great performances from its star and supporting members (especially Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Juno Temple). It’s also a breezy rewatch with the complete show coming in at 34 episodes, so this is a set you’ll find yourself returning to.

The Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K set is also the best the show has ever looked. The 4K transfer is wonderful, with the color really popping thanks to Dolby Vision, and there aren’t any minor compression issues like the Blu-ray release had since this is an eight-disc set rather than seven. The only disappointment is that the DTS-HD 5.1 audio is identical to the Blu-ray release, as an upgrade to Dolby Atmos would’ve been appreciated, but it still is well-mixed and sounds good.

As for Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K’s bonus features, well… there are none. I do like the packaging more than the previous Blu-ray set, as each season has its own case with its own artwork, as opposed to one single big case. However, it’s worth noting that the 4K release doesn’t come with the “Believe” poster that the Blu-ray did either. It’s a shame there’s no reason to pick this up beyond seeing the show in better quality.

Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K Review: Final Verdict

Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way 4K release is the best way to experience the show. However, if you already own the prior Blu-ray release, there isn’t much reason for upgrading. With identical audio and zero bonus features, there’s not much here for double-dippers, even if this is the version to pick up for newcomers.
